Henryk Czyż is dead

On January 16 Henryk Czyż died in Warsaw. We have lost an outstanding conductor, composer and educator.

Henryk Czyż, a Polish conductor and composer, was born in Grudziądz on 16 April 1923. Between 1946-48 he studied law and philosophy at the Nicholas Copernicus University in Toruń and at the same time collaborated with Wilam Horzyca in the Ziemia Pomorska [Pomerania Region] Theatre. In 1952 he graduated from the State Higher School of Music in Poznań where he studied composition with Tadeusz Szeligowski and conducting with Walerian Bierdiajew. Between 1952-53 he conducted in the Stanisław Moniuszko Opera in Poznań, between 1953-57 was second conductor of the Polish Radio Full Symphony Orchestra, between 1957-60 - artistic director and first conductor of the Łódź Philharmonic, between 1961-62 - conductor of the Opera in Warsaw and between 1963-67 - artistic director and first conductor of the Cracow Philharmonic. Between 1962-66 he taught a conducting class at the State Higher School of Music in Cracow, his pupils including A. Pałka and A. Wit. Between 1971-74 he acted as Generalmusikdirektor in Düsseldorf, and, from 1972 - at the same time - artistic director and first conductor of the Łódź Philharmonic.

Czyż appeared in almost all the European countries, in South America and the USA, conducting the symphony orchestras of Leningrad (St. Petersburg at present), Berlin, Stockholm, Madrid, BBC, Santa Cecilia and so on. He recorded a number of records on the labels of Polskie Nagrania (Polish Recordings), Philips, Harmonia Mundi, Mielodija, Electrola, which won numerous international awards, such as Grand Prix du Disque and the Edison prize for the recording of Penderecki's St Luke Passion - Philips 1967, Grand Prix Mondial for the quadrophonic recording of Schumann's Das Paradies und die Peri - Electrola 1974. From 1980 Czyż taught a composition class at the Academy of Music in Warsaw. His extensive repertory included many oratorio forms, a considerable amount of classical and modern music. He introduced a number of works by Stravinsky, Honegger, Debussy and others into Polish concert halls and opera houses. Between 1966-69 he collaborated closely with Krzysztof Penderecki, conducting the first performances of St Luke Passion, Dies irae, The Devils of Loudun and presenting his works in many countries.

He published several books on music, including
Flight from under the Clef, Warsaw 1973, translated into German with the title Giocoso ma non troppo, Berlin 1974; A China Cupid, Warsaw 1977; As if from the Music, Warsaw 1978; Serkal and other Teasers, Łódź 1978; The Devil Is Not So Black - Television Tales, Łódź 1979; Teasers, Warsaw 1982; Scriptease, Warsaw 1988; I Remeber as if Today, Warsaw 1993; Untimely Jokes, Warsaw 1995.

Czyż was decorated with: A Gold Cross of Merit (1953), A Chevalier Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1958), A Prize of the Ministry of Culture and Art, first degree (1975), A State Prize, first degree, for the entire oeuvre (1978).

Compositions: Triptych 1948; Study 1949; Variations on a Polish Theme 1950; Quartet for wind instruments, 1949; Divertimento for chamber orchestra, 1950; Wedding Party, cantata for baritone, mixed choir and orchestra, words by B. Jasieński, 1949; morality-opera A Woman with White Hair, libretto by the composer after an idea by D. Baduszkowa, 1962; a comic opera Distracted Cynologist, libretto by Sławomir Mrożek, 1965; Inge Bartsch after K. I. Gałczyński, 1982. Film music: Cellulose (1954, directed by J. Kawalerowicz), Ewa Wants to Sleep (1957, directed by T. Chmielewski), Rancho Texas (1959, directed by W.Berestowski), Spade Knave (1960, directed by T. Chmielewski).

37th Krakow International Festival of Composers, 10-18 May, 2025 under honorary auspices of Aleksander Miszalski, Mayor of Krakow

 

The theme of the 37th Krakow International Festival of Composers is music in music. Already in the 1970s, this issue was studied by the outstanding founder of the Krakow Theoretical School, Professor Mieczysław Tomaszewski. He reflected on the subject in an article entitled “At the Opening: why ‘music in music’”, which was published before one of the famous Music Meetings in Baranów. 

CANTICUM PROFUGORUM – Krzysztof Knittel’s oratorio about refuge and war on the latest album ANAKLASIS

The theme of Krzysztof Knittel’s work is refuge and the uncertainty and anxiety about the unknown associated with it, as well as the other side of this topic, i.e. the need to provide help and shelter. The text of the oratorio is based on a poem by Tadeusz Sławek. The piece features singing, recitations, choral parts and improvisations based on the traditions of the Middle East. The album was premiered on 15 March during the 11th Festival of Premieres in Katowice.

Music fit for a king. Discover the crown jewel of Polish polyphony

Musicologists commonly call it “Kras 52” – after the former reference number it was given in the Krasiński Library. It is the most valuable Polish source of medieval polyphonic music, which shaped the soundscape of the court of the first Jagiellons and Kraków at that time. The manuscript is gaining new life now, thanks to a performance edition by Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett and Marc Lewon. “Krasiński Codex” has just been published by PWM Edition with the support of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

Korean violinist Bomsori Kim turns ambassador of Grażyna Bacewicz’s music

Frequent guest of the world’s most famous music venues (New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Royal Albert Hall and BBC Proms, Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus), in February 2021 Bomsori signed an exclusive contract with the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label. As of this year, she also bears the honourable title of ambassador of Grażyna Bacewicz’s music, which she performs worldwide, promoting the legacy of Poland’s most important woman composer.

Witold Szalonek: A Double Portrait of the Silesian Master. In Search of the Musical Soul of Voices and Instruments

The 4CD album featuring songs and instrumental works by the Silesian master goes on sale as of 8 November. Released by the ANAKLASIS music label, it will be premiered on 3 December during a special PWM Edition concert held as part of the 12th International Days of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki at the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice.

Michael Bates' Acrobat and Lutosławski Quartet on a Polish tour with music by Witold Lutoslawski

The esteemed American-Canadian jazz musician Michael Bates, his Acrobat Ensemble and the Lutosławski Quartet will perform three concerts in Poland in November. The repertoire will include material recorded by the musicians on the album METAMORPHOSES: VARIATIONS ON LUTOSŁAWSKI, released by ANAKLASIS in the REVISIONS series.

 

The artists have already successfully presented it at Lincoln Center and Barbès Jazz Club in New York. In autumn 2024 we will have the opportunity to hear them live for the first time in Poland: 14.11 - Krakow, 15.11 - Lublin, 17.11 - Wroclaw.

First International Digital Musicology Conference

The Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw invites to the inaugural session of the biennial International Digital Musicology Conference, which will be held 23–25 October 2024, at the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, Poland. The conference focuses on the integration of digital technologies into musicological research, with a special emphasis on introducing digital tools and methods to the Polish academic community, where digital musicology has not yet been widely adopted.
