The String Quartet is one of the compositions by Józef Koffler that were long thought to be lost. A trace of it remained only in lists of his works. However, it was known to have been an important work, on a par with the String Trio, op. 10, which launched the Polish composer’s international career. Both works – as we read in an English-language promotional brochure from the turn of 1938 and 1939 – manifest the ‘exceptionally rare purity and transparency of his phrasing combined with a high degree of intensity in treatment’.

Hence the discovery of the score and parts of the Quartet in the library of the Royal College of Music in London added to Koffler’s extant musical legacy a work of considerable importance. Not just because the String Quartet, written in 1934, displays a masterful synthesis of twelve-note technique with neoclassical formal premises, but also on account of the remarkable fortunes of this work.
