Marcel Chyrzyński

Marcel Chyrzyński graduated with distinction in 1995 from the composition class of Marek Stachowski at the Krakow Academy of Music. He studied orchestration with Krzysztof Penderecki and computer music with Marek Chołoniewski. He also studied with American Fulbright scholars Richard Boulanger, Cindy McTee and Rodney Oakes. He honed his compositional skills on numerous courses, working under the guidance of such composers as Paul Patterson, Sylvano Bussotti, Claude Lefebvre, Jōji Yuasa, Bogusław Schaeffer, Lidia Zielińska and Hanna Kulenty.


In 1998 he gained his doctorate in composition, in 2010 he completed his habilitation in musical arts, and in 2021 the President of the Republic of Poland awarded him the title of professor. From 2014 to 2019 he was director of the Institute of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory at his alma mater. He has been a guest lecturer in Poland, Slovakia, Italy, Mexico, RSA, South Korea and the US, and also on international composition courses in Takefu (Japan) and at the Seoul International Music Festival.


He is a laureate of numerous composition competitions, including the Tadeusz Baird Young Composers’ Competition in Warsaw (first prize for Ferragosto per tromba, pianoforte e batteria, 1997). In 2021 Haiku No. 3 for solo flute was awarded a distinction in the National Flute Association’s competition (US), and in 2025 he won two silver medals at the Global Music Awards (US) in the ‘Contemporary Music – Composer’ category for works from the albums Marcel Chyrzyński. Chamber Works and Marcel Chyrzyński. Clarinet Pieces. That same year, he also won the Diamond Prize in the ‘Original Composition’ category at the Debussy International Music Competition (UK), the Grand Prize in the ‘Original Composition’ category at the Carl Reinecke International Music Competition, top prize in the ‘Composition’ category at the Muzyczne Orły international competition for his Symphony No. 2 (‘Symphony of Paintings’), the Master Prize in the ‘Best Orchestral Music’ category at the Mozart International Music Competition (UK) for his Symphony No. 1 (‘Un livre sur l’homme’) and the Diamond Prize in the ‘Original Composition’ category at the Berlioz International Music Competition for Ukiyo-e No. 4.

 

His works have been performed in most European countries, and also in Armenia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, China, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, the RSA , Mexico, Brazil, Panama, the US and Canada. Marcel Chyrzyński’s works have appeared on almost 30 CDs (DUX, ZPR Records, Acte Préalable, Polskie Radio, AM in Krakow, PGMaudio, PWM Edition, Orpheus Classical and Requiem Records) and have been broadcast by TVP in Poland and KBS in South Korea, and also on radio stations in Poland, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Finland, Estonia, the US and Australia. His scores are published by PWM Edition and Edition Ferrimontana.

 

Marcel Chyrzyński is a member of the Polish Composers' Union and the ZAiKS Authors' Association. In 2002, he became a member of the board of the Krakow Division of the Polish Composers' Union, and has been its president since 2016. In 2005, he founded the Polish Electroacoustic Music Association.

Since 2014, he has been the director of the International Festival of Krakow Composers.
